Thanx GH, I see from your collection several 8"+ non VR .357s. I cant tell from the pic if the longer VRs are in 357AM? one of the things I like so much in my 180 is its balance. i dont believe it an accident the backstrap is so "chunky". of course bigger is not always better. several guns have got the in-then out of my collection this way.
would you give me an idea of the balance point in these two? my opinion is that the VR only serves an aesthetic purpose. |

Thought I'd throw you all a screen shot of the receivers we're working on. Solid modeling, you gotta love it! More to come.

Hi Brian,
Great to see your progress. Is this by SolidWorks or Pro-E? I'm thinking of getting one of them to replace my decades old 2D CAD system and would like to have your view on it.

This is a SolidWorks model Yoshi. Much easier and more user freindly than Pro-E in my opinion. |

If we are speaking strictly about balance then I have to defer back to the guidance LEJ has posted time and time again, the 6 ½” VR Bbl is THE best length. It just has a natural balance that is hard to beat. With that said, the longer Bbls, 8 ½ VR and 10 ½” non VR, are not too nose heavy, they just are not as well balanced as the 6 ½” and you will notice the difference just as soon as you pick them up. Some folks are not bothered by this in the least, and then people like you and I may be more sensitive to it. As such, the 6 ½” is my preference for shooting. If we were talking about pure aesthetics, the its hard to beat the wow factor of the 8 ½” VR, and truth be told it does seem to offer a bit more bang (velocity) Well that’s one mans opinion, and its only that, as we are talking about a very individual personal preference much like the thick vs. thin grips issue. As for the VR serving only an aesthetic purpose, well I would debate that point, I think it adds a significant improvement to the way my eye picks up the sights, and I “suspect” it serves other mechanical purposes but as I am not an engineer I would attempt to discuss those. And finally even if it was only an aesthetic gimmick, I like it! So that’s enough for me to want it. ;-) If the VR is not to your liking no worries, I won’t hold that against you,,, LOL Truth be told I am considering asking Brian Maynard to make me a “Star Wars”/”Space Gun” Bbl that would be un-ribbed and have a unique taper from the Bbl extension to the Bbl where it would appear much like one of the prop guns used in Star Wars. Well I considering it,,, GH

Well it would be different,,, ;-) Actually I think it might look interesting; a very rounded transition from the Bbl extension to the Bbl, then say an 8 1/2" 357 AMP Bbl with thin and straight profile (no taper) add a screw on Magnaported/flash suppressor, and maybe a funky front site like on the Ruger Hunter model Mark III 22’s Load it up with some 125 gr FMJ sizzlers and you could have an interesting conversation piece at the range.
Well maybe,,, But then I have a lot of other items on the list ahead of this one,,, Truth be told, I think I would start a few of the BABY AUTOMAG projects before this one.
Just wish I could find a couple of BAM's in MA as doner guns to start from,,,

George, do you think the .22 would cycle? I guess we could build up the accelerator a bit.

Thanks. Appreciate your input. Originally I was more towards the Pro-E (now its called Creo), but I will check the SolidWorks out.
