Larry did in fact make the gun for Harry and it was made while he was employed at AMT...he just doesn't remember the exact date; so I am not sure "it was not one of the originals" is applicable.

I have to correct myself on the post I wrote that XP-01 was my pistol. It is not. XP-02 is my pistol. Harry got the XP-01 that I made. Sorry for the confusion.

Sorry, when I said "not one of the originals" I meant in the common use of the phrase, as in not one of the first set of XP Baby AutoMags that Brian made.

I do not question that it is a genuine Larry Grossman made gun built at the AMT facility.

But clearly there is a difference between something made during the actual prototype period and at some point later.

It doesn’t make the gun a lesser quality item in any way, but I do think to some collectors these kinds of details matter.

I would be more than happy to take possession of it at any time, but for historical purposes it would not be legitimate to call that the first XP Baby AutoMag.

Agreed George...and while were on the subject of Brians somewhat under appreciated contributions perhaps you can coax Brian into some words about the .40KMP and what his contributuion to that project was!

Sorry, you will have to stand in line as I want to get him to document the process of making an 8 1/2" VR Bbl, and then see if he knows anything about how the Auto Mag HardBaller was made, then,,, ok I guess we can fit the 40 KMP in after the HardBaller, but then I got a few more,,, LOL

Well, the "Hardballer Auto Mag" is another discussion that will need to involve Larry and that is not meant to mean exclusively...and then of course the chronilogical history of events on the development  of this pistol is well known by Bruce. By the way most think that .40KMP stands for .40 Kincel Magnum Pistol...not true...right Brian!

If my old and tired memory is still intact, the 40 KMP was not built on an Auto Mag platform, but rather on one of the Automag (III or IV maybe) platforms, which for me is of no interest.

I had one of the early Automag IV 45 Win Mag guns and it was possibly the worst gun I have ever owned.

The quality was bad beyond anything I have ever seen and it would only shoot 3 rounds in a row before the slide would "stick" from galling, and I recall trying several full synthetic lubes at the time and NOTHING worked.

And thats all aside from my serious dislike of the way too short grip, the crappy slide mounted safety, and the sandblasted with gravel finish,,,

Are you getting a feeling I didn't like it,,, YUP I couldn't get rid of it fast enough!

The ONLY positive thing I could possibly say about it was that it was very accurate, all three rounds that it would shoot!

As for the HardBaller Auto Mag, I only wish we could get Larry to come on and tell us about making it and some of the other great creations he has produced.

I am glad Brian cleared up the baby Auto Mag mystery.  At least these guns were made while Harry was alive and the company was still in business.   I have always said that a serial number means nothing.  The historical significance of a particular gun is of importance and not the numbers stamped on it.
Speaking of markings, I believe .40KMP stands for, Kincel Maynard Pistol and there was one made on an Auto Mag platform.  One of our members here has it along with the dies and the chamber reamer.
It's so good to see Ric, Brian and George posting here.  What a wealth of knowledge they have.

The .40 KMP (Kincel Maynard Precision) appeared in the Sept '91 issue of GunWorld magazine, authored by my good friend Eric Kincel. It was Eric's brainchild but he consulted me on a few of the dimensions, mainly the angle at the neck. Although the guns used for the test were the AM IV & the Competitor, Eric & I did manage to put together an original AM barrel chambered for the .40KMP and it worked flawlessly. Incidently, this was a wildcat round that outperformed Walt Jones 10mm Magnum by a long shot.

Hi Bruce, OUTSTANDING to hear from you!

As I have said so many times, I would not be an Auto Mag owner today if not for your support and guidance!

I am so greatful for all your help over the years words escape me.

Maybe some day you can fill in some of the details about the Auto Mag Hardballer for me.

And in case I have not ever said, I very much prefer the one with the Auto Mag backstrap (and I think the Bbl was different also and I prefer that version). The P38 backstrap version just doesn't quite do it for me. Dont get me wrong, if I won it in a raffle I wouldn't give it back, but if I has a choice I like the first prototype.

I would love to know if the frame was shortened (front to back) and if they made a special bolt. And pretty much anything else you cal tell us,,, Well some day,,,

Are you still working on the second book?  If so, you can count on me to but a couple copies!

Keep in touch.
