Interesting. I have a Contender in 44 Rem mag with a 17 HMR extra barrel. I also have an Encore muzzleloader (45 & 50 cal barrels) that I convert to 445 SuperMag. I don’t see an advantage to using a non-rimmed cartridge but it’s still kind of cool.

Yes, that was welcome news to us die hard muzzleloader hunters. It is reassuring that replacement parts (especially Pro-Hunter breech plugs) will be available in the future. I took this doe last month with my 50 cal Encore using a magnum charge of BH209 behind a 300 gr Thor Lightning bullet in the White River National Forest. No scopes allowed on muzzleloaders here in Colorado, which is no problem with a T/C.

I’m currently mulling the pros and cons of getting a 14” Encore barrel in 30-06 vs a 14” Contender barrel in 7-30 Waters for range fun and handgun hunting. I’ve made my own wildcat cases in the past and will handload for both, so the logistics of the 7-30 are more exciting than off-putting. Anyone have experience with either option?

Well I have both (among some others) but you realy can't compare the 30-06 with the 7-30 Waters...

While the Contender 7-30 Waters is fun and easy to shoot in "pistol mode" (as in holding any other handgun) the Encore in 30-06 is to heavy to do so. I don't talk about the recoil but weight. You need a rest to shoot the Encore.

About recoil for the 30-06 Encore, that is no problem to shoot, it will lift your arm up but just let it go... That was so with the original 15 inch barrel and No brake. It will also produce a huge muzzle blast and flame with some powders. If you ever get one, try some Barnaul ammunition and you will see lightning on a sunny day!
I have put a muzzle brake (Ebiarms) on mine just to see what that thing did. Holy cow, what a difference, now it stay just flat, zero climb but straigt back and far less as before. Like shooting a different caliber... True, that triple chamber comp is abit overkill but that's what I had laying around to experiment with.
I also have the Factory 15 inch 308 with no comp and some day I will make video comparing the two.

About the 7-30 Waters, you can shoot that all day long, not to heavy, with the 14 inch and build in factorybrake recoil is about the same as a 357 Magnum.

Well, I only use my guns as rangetoys and have NO experience in hunting sorry.
However, the T/C's are fun to play with in the range...

I only have one Encore.  Chambered in 470 Nitro Express.

Tony

Run it up, until you blow it up, then back it down a bit.

Luc, that information is very helpful. I would really like to shoot it offhand as a pistol, so it seems like the 7-30 would be a better option for me. The 30-06 Sounds like it needs a suppressor and at that point, why not just use a rifle?

Tony, please link to a video if possible. I would love to see what that thing looks like in action, especially in slo-mo. How many times have you shot it?

I agree, if you want to shoot the gun offhand, the Contender would be the best option.
Not saying the Encore cant be shot offhand but you need to work very hard to stay on target. Well at least for me, I'm no gorrilla man ;-)
My 30-06 is very accurate shooting from a sandbag at 100 meters makes just one ragged hole in the x-ring. Those guns a very precise. Always wonderd if the lefthand twist had something to do with it? All my factory T/C barrels have a leftturn twist.

About the 7-30 Waters, reloading is just as easy as any other rifle cartridge.
You can even run 30-30 cases into the 7-30 sizing die and they work.

I don't have a video, but I can make one.  Unfortunately the barrel doesn't have much rotational rise due to big ports on top of the brake, so it recoils straight back and jams your hand/wrist something fierce.  I would much rather have more rotation and less straight back recoil.  I have only fired it about 30 shots or so.

Tony,
do you think it would make a big difference if the sideports are pointed backwards,
So the vented gasses are sort of pulling the pistol foreward? (if you understand what I mean...)
The ports on mine are like that and I feel the backward recoil is far less as without the compensator.
