And what kind of wood?

I like the smooth finish. Seems to show off the character of the wood better than checkered.

A guy on ebay is selling Automag grips. I ask could he make smooth walnut instead of checkered walnut. I also think without checkering can see wood better. He said can do. Then I ask if he could make them out of a presentation grade type walnut. He said can do for a little extra. So they cost me less than hundered. As stated in his ad some fitting may be required and in one area of grips had to take a little off for safety clearence. I remember Lee Jurras said due to frame variations custom grips need to be made to each indiviual frame. He goes  by anydlof on ebay and email address is mailto:pfoldyna@aol.com - pfoldyna@aol.com  What you see has got linseed oil only. Of course I used the o ring under grip screws. In any case for less than a hundered I'm very pleased with them..

Rick, they look great!  Sounds very reasonable too. I'll have to check the guy out.  Thanks for showing everyone.

What kind and size of O rings are you using? Are they standard hardware store type?

I got by O rings from Lee Jurras about 8 years ago. Someone on the old forum mentioned he found same size at hardware store. I think used for a household water fixture of some type. Maybe someone here will remember.

I've got some o-rings somewhere that are the right size.  But I used ones from my Harbor Freight O-ring kit, the whole kit is like $4 on sale, and has a bunch of the correct size o-rings.  Cheaper than buying them seperate at Lowe's

I got some Checkered, with the Name on them from him, and a pair without.  I wish we could get him to do some in Micarta.

I think I tried to get up a group buy from this guy a while back on the old forum, and well, it flopped, maybe 2-3 interested.  And that was trying to have him profile a pair of grips like Bruce's Finger groove grips.

Nice looking grips, beautiful wood.

Rick, do you plan to do heavy shooting with those, or are you thinking of reserving them more for display? That's a decision I'll have to make on my plans to have some made from several exotic woods I've collected.

I shoot them all. Even if  I had the most expensive Automag in the world. Nothing heavy but I shoot as time and ammo dictate

I did a little internet searching on micarta grips and there's a lot on it, mostly for 1911s, some for colts, colt clones and rugers. There are a few references to it for other guns like the FA and Mag. Research revolvers. They apparently make it from paper (the smoothest finish), linen, canvas (rough finish) and even wood. Working with it is talked about in this discussion - http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=288459 - http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=288459

Until some AM micarta grips become available I think I'll continue with the idea of having some made in various woods, or maybe even trying it myself since there's a good local source for woodworking tools and exotic woods.

Ginsaw,

years ago I went to a formica (ie, micarta is simliar if not the same) where yes, paper is dipped repeatedly in a bath and layer are built up.  I imagine linen, simply starts with linen.

I made templetes to rough out grips close to the correct shape and do some of the inletting, but I haven't had time to mess with it.

I did make two sets of grips by hand, one smooth, and one finger grooved.

Because of the reports of cracking on AM wood grips, I want to make sure I understand about using O rings. I assume the rings go in the sockets between the screw heads and the body of the wood grips and are as wide as the screw head itself. That being the case I suppose you could just cut pieces of rubber to fit as well as buying something. I imagine it should be hard rubber.

The real question - is that going to stop any cracking or splitting.

Other possible solutions - first, experiment with different woods. Some are tougher. FWIW the toughest and most beautiful wood I know of is osage orange. Unforuntunately it's so tough it's almost impossible to work with. You can wear out a chainsaw trying to cut it. But it is attractive with shades of greens and oranges.

Second - how about a brass cup in the socket that would fit under and around the screw head? It would mean a slightly larger hole but wouldn't that do a better job of catching the recoil forces? If done right it shouldn't look bad. Some grips have those - like the Franzite grips I have on a BHP.

Third - AM grips I've seen don't include insert areas fitting into corresponding areas on the frame that would absorb and spread out recoil forces. There're other guns that way like the 1911s, but on those the recoil is more from the frame straight into your hand. But on some, like the Colt Model '08, recoil inserts are present.

Anyway, there seem to be open places in the AM frame that might allow some additional inside grip panel "landscape" to be added.

These are some ideas I'm just throwing out to see if anyone agrees.

Guys

I found mine at Lowe's.Go the hardware isle and all those drawers,  search until you find the rubber stuff and you are looking for 3/16" "O" rings. Take a grip screw to be sure.

I'm having a Bowie Knife made with Osage Orange handles. I wanted a orange or yellow color but not for sure what the particular Osage Orange he has will turn out.
