There has been talk about AMT experimenting with a folding stock they would market with the 16 1/2" Lightning barrel. I had never seen anything like that until just recently.
This one is not a folder and is not marked anywhere. The design and execution is amazing. You can't really tell from the pics that although it is fairly simple, it is very well done, including the bluing. It mounts neatly with little tolerance using the grip screws. Also great on the shoulder, with the sights lining up perfectly with my eye. The plastic butt has not been modified, except probably for length. At what would be the tang and grip area it is very slim, like a BB gun. I can't figure out where it would come from if it came from a donor stock/gun. My gut feeling is that it is an AMT prototype. Why else would they make the 16 1/2" barrel?

As everyone knows, AMT did and tried a lot of weird stuff.  I think this is a very cool find.  The only question I have is, why would they have put this on a Ruger frame?  Why wouldn't they just walk over to their stock/shelves and grab one of their Lightning frames?

Again, very cool talking piece.

Thumbs Up

One of my AMTs is on a Ruger MK I frame.  I converted it to a Mk II. I think mine is 10.5.

I can only imagine that there were thousands of Ruger's sold by the time AMT got on the market.  Then when AMT started advertising their barrel options, it may have probably been appealing to those Ruger owners to "have something different".  That's why the mismatched frame/uppers like you have?

If I had to guess, I wouldn't guess that AMT would have come up with this "prototype" and grab a Ruger frame, as opposed to getting one of their own frames out of their stock.

Everything is a guess.

It's still unique and cool that it is shown and shared.

It actually didn't come on this frame. I got just the barrel and stock together and put them together with a frame that I had.
There are a few 16 1/2" Lightnings out there but very few are on a Lightning frame. Many are on Ruger frames. Actually, most I've seen were barrel/receiver only. There is no marketing material for them. I've always wondered what the point was of in making the 16 1/2", it's really quite clumsy as a pistol. This stock seems to be the missing link

I do think I remember a lot of the 16.5” barrel assemblies and some others being sold surplus after AMT closed.

I have heard that Gunparts.com sold some. But every other Lightning part they bought is still up on their site. If they sell out, they don't take the part listing down, they just label them out of stock. And there is nothing there about the 16 1/2" so I wonder about that story.

Gunparts got a lot of their parts from another person that had a lot an AMT parts that sold out.  That guy was selling original AMP magazine bodies and gunparts has those now.  I bought parts from him including a Lightning 22 Rifle barrel.

Was that the same guy who marked about 100 Lightning with the serial numbers starting with AMTL? I think he was out of Montana or Wyoming

I’m betting it was.  He was out west around there.
