Hey guys, I know you've been keeping track of the bidding on Gun Broker collections, individual AMP barrels and parts, but I haven't heard any observations on the bidding. Obtaining a 41JMP for us working stiffs is going to be a little tough. Oh well, if you got it, use it and have fun.

I almost posted something similar last night and also wondered why not more interest here.

Anyway, the 41 is over 5K and 59 bids, with 1 day something hours left. The other two are over 3k.

I don't usually follow these auctions. Do they typically spike way up at the end on items like this?

As Paul V. stated: " If you got it, use it".
I take a more Zen approach: : It is only on loan. Use it while it is yours".
Some of the auction prices scare me until I realize that nobody is bidding: so what is it really worth to somebody until they pony up the cash?

I should have bought that 41 when I had the chance.

But, then again, the money was probably better spent at the time.

I can't complaine about what I have.

Hi Guys,

Sorry, been workin a lot and working on house, yard and boats (tis the season) and not been on the board much.

I have not been following the auctions much, but know Don Nixon has Bbls and parts on all the time. As far as his stuff goes ( the auctions) it seems to be more of a case of if you need it, buy it, as there is no where else to go and Don is a real straight up kind of guy, so no worries.

Regarding the Walter Sanford stuff, not sure what to make of it all, its like the magician who keeps pulling more stuff out of the hat,,, I wasn’t under the impression that Harry kept all these Auto Mags, and seems like Walter keeps saying “this is the last one” but then another comes along in a few weeks,,, Who knows,,,

But then does it really matter where it came from? If Walter was out buying this stuff up on the side and reselling it as “Dads” guns, is it really worth any more or less, NO!

How many sets of all 3 Custom 100’s have you seen lately???

So it pretty much boils down to, do you want it, and how bad,,,

As for the 41 JMP, seems to me that even LEJ has said it wasn’t a great round, so I don’t understand all the interest. The 44 AMP is a big easy to load bruiser that just works! The 357 AMP is a sweet round but can be a bit tricky to set up for initially. The 41 JMP, well in my book its just a novelty. Might be interesting to play with if someone gave you a Bbl, but not worth any more (or maybe even as much) as the 357 or 44 but for collectible reasons, so don’t feel like you missed out on much.

Well that’s my rant of the day,,, Sorry to be a wet blanket, I just tell it as I see it,,, (doesn’t mean I’m right by and means,,,)

As my friend Bruce Stark always keep your recoil rods tight,,,

Enjoy - GH

Some of the interest in the 41 may be from those like me who have had lots of success with it in deer hunting in revolvers and like its combination of great accuracy, hard hitting power and extremely mild recoil and then think, wouldn't it be cool to have that in the AM. That may help to explain its appeal for anyone not otherwise "into" the 41. Now what its reputation is as an AM round may be something entirely different. Loading for it I imagine could be a project. And for those of us who don't reload, you could have trouble finding a commercial or custom reloader who'd do it. I've also read about it here enough to be concerned about possible case/chamber fitting issues.

On the other hand I think I read that Curmudgeon may have tuned this one, and besides that I have heard of some who load for it and use it sucessfully in deer hunting. So it can certainly be managed.

Those are shooting concerns. Collecting's another matter. There I agree with what J said - can't complain with what I have. That's really it. In the case of the 44 Custom 100, sure I would like one. But then I find myself wondering what would I really be buying that I don't have now? Is the 44 Custom 100 really all that different a gun from my Pasadena or TDE? It couldn't be in the same sense as the difference, say, between a first and third generation SAA or the difference between a 29 and 629 or an original WWI 1911 and a modern knock-off. I know it has a nice finish and grips (other nice grips can be had or made for any of them), but isn't the principle difference what is stenciled on the side? Is that worth paying twice what a good clean "field model" costs? And then as with any presentation model gun of any kind you have the old problem of not being able to chance hunting it much, for all the usual reasons.

There, I'm doing pretty good, I'm close to talking myself out of bidding for one of them...

When it comes to guns and hunting, personal preference plays as important a roll as scientific fact, in my NEVER humble opinion,,,

41 Mag or 41 JMP, I cant really make a case for either of them compared to 44 AMP or 357 AMP or even 44 Mag for that matter.

41 Mag compared to 357 Mag, maybe there is an argument there, but unless there is a specific reason for ignoring all the other calibers out there, then I really don’t see why anyone would ever be interested beyond novelty, there is just nothing unique offered in the 41 (JMP or Mag) and if anything the bullet choice is somewhat limited compared to so many other rounds out there.

Just my 2 cents.

As for the Custom 100’s, from a shooters point of view, there is no reason to even look at one of these guns, they are safe queens. Any one thinking of buying them and shooting them is just throwing money out the window! There is no functional difference from any other clean Auto Mag you might own or are looking at to buy. Now from a collectors standpoint, they are only worth the eyeball-popping price tag they seem to be selling for if you have ALL 3!!! Not sure why 2 different buyers would be paying so much for these guns, as the same pieces have been recently available for half this price,,,

After this event, I’m now seriously thinking of selling mine! At 10k apiece, that’s some serious coin and well beyond what I thought they would go for if the same person bought all 3, let alone 3 different people (depending on who gets the last one),,,

If anyone seriously wishes to offer me similar money, feel free to do so, I’ll throw in a steak dinner with every purchase!!! LOL

Later guys.

Yikes.

Maybe I should consider selling some of my Automags too.

Hmm.  Wonder what the payoff is on my car?

One of the most remarkable things to me about the Auto Mag has from the start been the variety of interesting place names stamped on them. The markings on the guns read like a road Atlas of LA.

The point being, if I wanted to be a collector of AMs I could get interested, not in spending unbelievable sums acquiring a few rare custom models (that as GH pointed out, aren't for shooting), but instead finding examples of each place name. You'd have a nice representative cross-section of the whole AM family, plenty of challenge in locating them all, guns you can hunt with and not worry too much about getting a scratch somewhere, and you'd spend a whale of a lot less money.

That would be my idea of collecting.

Which reminds me - has anyone ever actually seen a Sturgis Auto Mag? Do they exist?
