Why not just take an empty shell and measure it. If it is too long for your chamber, trim a couple thousandths with a case trimmer and check again. Check until you have positive contact, and your bolt rotates closed easily, with no hang-ups? This is what has been said (and written by Lomont, Jurras, and others) for the .357AMP. If you can't find a long 44AMP shell to start with, start with a 308 or 30.06 case and start cutting/trimming it down. You could do this fairly cheaply for all your Auto Mag's if you so choose, and keep that shell in the case with your Auto Mag (as "the standard"). I am new to this and trying to learn myself, but i can't see the need for machining, or paying to have guages made. Please educate. I am willing to listen and learn.  |

You can also use Cerrosafe to get a chamber & leade casting for your barrel. Some care needs to be taken to avoid over filling into the lug recesses, but you can always melt it out and try again.

I take for granted that commercially produced 44amp. Is now available and that not every owner may reload for it. When I first started reloading for my 44amp. All my cases were new unfired starline brass. But as I used this ammo and began to reload it case sorting by length became necessary as the stretched after resizing, or some were deemed less than useable. These cases would get used to set the reloading dies in the press every time a die was removed and reinstalled and to test bullet seating/crimp with no powder or primer. These dummies were then loaded into chamber to test for function. At that time I only loaded my ammo in factory length spec cases. Later i learned that some automag had slightly longer chambers due to the factory method of jig welding the barrel extentions( or was this just the .357...can't remember!). It was then on my next batch that I used stretched case dummy loads and found that my gun would accept 1.303 cases but get sticky on 1.305 but my actual loaded cases never exceed 1.300.
As a side note starline made new brass specific to Wildey 44amp. That is too short to be used in an original automag, watch out for these if you find a deal just too good to be true on fleabay! I looked up the original spec in my copy of 'pasadena days': GO gage is 1.304 NO GO is 1.311 Now it is my understanding that a no go will not allow the hammer to drop. With an (anecdotal) acceptable headspace specification of .007 for residue.

For those concerned about case length, there is a very rare RCBS 44 AMP case forming die set on eBay right now:
It ends in 10 hours and right now the bid is only $36 although that will likely go up as there are ten bidders. It includes a trim die. There is also a 357 AMP trim die, as well as a 357 case forming set that has been oddly split up into two different auctions so you can buy the trim die alone.

I actually put in a bid on that .44 set thanks to an Ebay alert - and only realized now that it's being sold by Ricketts, who's actually a friend of mine from the FALFiles days. Small world.

I think if the seller is a business, EBay collects sales tax. But it’s possible they collect it for all transactions now?

The box is arriving today - I know the experienced folks have said that converting .308 etc brass is a pain, but I'd like to have the kit to be able to make them.
