    Posted: 13 Jun 2025 at 3:30pm
I recently purchased a Harballer Longslide which came with two magazines. a Mec Gar mag and an original magazine marked "AMT Hardballer" on the base plate. It runs fine with the Mec Gar mag but experiences failures to feed with the AMT mag. A simple spring replacement will probably fix it. The AMT Mag is a 7 rounder and when I went onto the Wolff Springs website, the springs for the government size were listed as 8 rounders. My question is this. Should I install the 8 round Government size mag springs or the 7 round Commander mag springs? Is there another brand/size of mag springs that is known to work well with the AMT Hardballers?
Sorry there are no pictures. I tried to upload them and for whatever reason, it won't let me.

Welcome to the group!

AMT magazines are notoriously bad. I would not waste time trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Just set it aside as a keepsake, and buy virtually any other 1911 magazine and be happy. You can probably get a cheap GI magazine for the price of a replacement spring, and have much better luck. Or buy another Mec Gar or similar for a bit more money. Either way you will be way ahead.

As for the photo upload, that’s an ongoing problem here. I routinely get error messages when trying to upload pics, but if you keep trying, mysteriously one will work eventually.

Hi and welcome to the AMT-guns forum.

+1 on the Mec Gar magazines, this is an Italien company that makes magazines for many big brands such as Beretta, FN - Browning, Sig, and many more.
They sure know how to make quality mags that work!

It is ironic that you cant hardly get your hands on a spare mag with the AMT hardballer stamp for less than a 100 bucks but yet they are not a quality mag. You are just paying for the nostalgia of having a factory amt mag when they can certainly be hit and miss. But yet us addicts will buy anything amt1

You are probably right. Not working properly seems to be an AMT theme yet I still own 4 of them. I just figured that for the price of a spring, I would take a shot at making the mag work. Worst case scenario, I wind up using that spring in another 1911 magazine. As I said in the original post, I'm just not sure whether I should try using a Government size 8 round mag spring or a smaller 7 round one. Thanks for replying

If it were me, i would try the 8 round longer spring. If it is longer than original it should add more push towards the chamber and worse case you might get one less bullet in the mag compared to a spring that comes up short which makes it soft and may not even push the last round enough to chamber. I am no expert, just my thoughts.

Thanks for your advice. Springs are pretty cheap and a little extra pressure probably won't hurt anything. Worst case scenario if they don't work, I definitely have a bunch of old 8 round 1911 mags who could probably benefit from having some new springs.
