Luc,

The intention is to use the tool to depress the front of the recoil spring plug, then rotate the bushing.  You don’t touch the recoil spring plug except to control it ti keep it from flying away after the bushing is turned.

My plastic tool is very strong, and will not harm the finish. I have a Colt metal tool that is not as strong, I don’t think.

Yes Mike I know and you're right!
However with those tools you cannot compress the recoil springPLUG because the recoilROD is to long on the AMT's. (see previous picture)

So converting the recoilrod is probably easier to do as making a tool as I did. Tongue
However the recoilspring of the AMIII is not that hard to compress, I can do that with my fingernail. Turning the barrelbushing is the hard part on my AMT III...

Thanks, so much.  I wondered about modifying the recoil rod but not being a gunsmith or even very knowledgeable about working on firearms, I was concerned I might irreversibly mess something up.  I don't know if this would have any impact on the value of the pistol but at this point, I'm not that concerned about it.  If I can't field strip it, I can't properly clean it. That'd knock the value down anyway.
Now, I just need to find someone local that knows what they're doing, that can machine the length down on the rod. And, find a sturdy bushing removal tool.  Next, I need to find out what the problem is, as to why this bushing is so hard to turn far enough to remove.
I'm including a photo of my Automag III. When I received the weapon as an inheritance, it had a Leupold "M8-2X Extended E.R. scope attached.  It doesn't look it but it was filthy inside, complete with cobwebs.  I regretted removing the scope, because of what it does to the appearance, but could not rack the slide enough to even try to clean the gun.  It's in excellent shape, other than the obvious, but I've never fired it.  My stepson has, and it's a beast. lol. I tried to attach a photo of the pistol with the scope attached, but the system would not allow it.  I'll try to attach it in a reply to this post.
I need to do more research or take it to be appraised, but want to clean it up as best I can first.  Ok, I've rambled enough.  Have a great day, guys, and I appreciate the information and suggestions.
Thanks again.

Convert the recoilrod as the one of my 45 WinMag (right pistol in the picture, Left one is my V .50)

When done so, you can use a "regular" barrel bushing wrench.

The thread drifted off-point from REAR SIGHT offset to BARREL BUSHING TOOL.
I was curious if ALL the AutoMag III's have the rear sight annoyingly off to the side when zeroed..  Or, are most actually zeroed with the rear sight centered?
What does your's do.. Thanks

Joe, this is where mine runs dead straight at 100 yards.

Hi Mike,
It seems that many of those pistols suffer from the same issue...
Besides that, mine is a good accurate shooter.
Very fun and easy shooting, recoils about the same a 9mm Para.

Just one tip, when stripping the pistol, be sure not loose the small plunger and spring INSIDE the recoilrod.
