AUTO MAG QUESTION

During the Pasadena production run of Auto Mags, the gun could be ordered with one of two options.

Option one entitled the purchaser to have his initials engraved on the frame and etched on the two magazines for free, if requested with prepayment for the gun.

Option two entitled the purchaser to have his serial number etched on the barrel and the two magazines.  This was done when requested with prepayment for the gun and an additional $30.00.  With this option the owners initials were also engraved on the frame as with option one.  This was done on the bottom of the frame under the front of the magazine floor-plate.

I owned an un-fired Pasadena gun with option one & two.  The production records show it to have been assembled by Minter on 10-12-71 with options one & two.

I told by an Auto Mag historian about the gun and he says that the gun is "not original."

He informed me that I would be lucky to get more than $2,000 for it because most people wouldn't want an un-original gun in their collection.

I tried to reason with him by saying if I had bought a new car and paid for air-conditioning, would that car not be original ?  No response.

If it is not original, what would you call it ?

It's original. There were many inconsistencies in the early years, many AM owners know these things. Every gun is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I had no issues selling an early AM with those options as well! Sounds like you have a nice piece!!

I did not know of this but always learning more about AMT. It was a factory option done at the factory before shipment so I don't see how you could say it's not original. Just sounds like one guys opinion to me. You might find someone willing to pay more for it because of having the unique added options.
