I know this was mentioned already but be careful with velocity on those berrys 

About 2 or maybe 3 years ago I phoned them to make sure I was reading their loading suggestions properly 

Their .500’s supposedly have a thicker plating which was attractive as i it wouldn’t be so cost prohibitive to target practice . They have a rating of 2k FPS, max. Which, IMO, was impressive as I wouldn’t choose a thinner jacketed bullet at velocity let alone a electroplated design. The .500s are 350gr so I used longshot which I like in the larger pistol cases when I don’t want to push it but don’t want trailboss either 

Anyway, I was around 1700fps a few feet from the muzzle .

Furious when I saw something that almost looked like a shotgun pattern of flying debris on the target . 

I phoned them again after sending them an email with my data and chrono data. Long story short they sent me a box of bullets 

...Which are still on my loading bench

I think their a great clean barrel shooting option for most semi auto but can’t expect too much more even with the “thicker“ plating on the magnum calibers 

Also, be careful with magnum primers. No stepping on toes, but, your needlessly raising pressure in a gun that needs to be coddled. It’s a , relatively, small case volume . There’s no extreme cold weather issue and your not using a powder that requires special,ignition requirements. If you are already at what is to be considered an AMP C.U,P. , you’re gonna beat it up more than needed

I use Winchester WLP primers which are rated for standard OR magnum loads. I figure Winchester primer should be good to ignite Winchester 296. 

Jacketed bullets exclusively. I use Hornady XTP because that’s what SBR uses although I suppose most any jacketed bullet would work. Won’t use plated....

I just installed new titanium pins in my two El Monte guns. Both had stock pins and Wolff springs, and the pins weighed 75 grains. New pins are 55 grains. 

My testing suggested I didn’t need to do this, but I will sleep better knowing I have!

Just curious, was your testing with Starline Brass?

Glad you found no problem, and also that you are doing what you think you need to do to be safe.

Life has no guarantees, but if you have a concern and feel you need to take some action, its better to take that action than live in fear. You may be right, or you may be wrong, but regret for not doing what your gut told you can be hard to live with if something then goes wrong and you didnt follow your instinct.

Exactly. I initially ran the test and determined it was unnecessary many months ago (yes Starline brass, Winchester primers). But after hearing this tale of destruction I decided a new firing pin and spring was cheap insurance for peace of mind, whether it’s justified or not. 

Personally I believe the new Wolff firing pin springs I had already fitted to my firing pins were all I really needed. But I didn’t feel like being proven wrong about that, the hard way!
