A while back I was talking to guy in my little local gun shop about AMT's and I mentioned OMC. He said he had never heard of OMC. So week or so later I took 5 380 Backups in to show him an OMC, an AMT made in Covina, EL Monte, Irwindale and an IAI. A customer in there told me that I had a bad habit. Little did he know how many more I still had at home. So I figured it was time to seek help and join the forum of other like minded AMT lovers that get me. 17 single action. 1 double action and my one and only 22LR bottom right.

The last one I bought finally had the Backup II on it. I am not sure how the single action became known as the #2 when it was made before the double action version came along. It is also ironic to me that the 380 Backup was their most produced gun however none of them say Arcadia Calif. on them.

I have an OMC model. I bought it at a local gun shop for a song with a Safari-land holster. When I got home though I found that the safety lever was bad so I had to find a replacement. But I did find one and have loved it ever since!! Nice collection!!

I think it is safe to say that you are the number one holder of baby automags. That is one that still remains on my want list. I once seen a lightning on broker with a 16.5 in barrel. Claimed that most people didn't know they existed. I think it said they was only sold as an upper, not as a full gun. It was strapped to a rugger frame so could tell it was parted together. I have never found any other info on a 16.5 amt lightning. So not sure if it was for real or if a gun smith machined down a rifle barrel and made it look legit. Anyone got any insight on the 16.5 inch lightning?

There is not much out there about the 16 1/2" Lightning. Here is what I've seen and heard.
I guess I will start with what I've not seen. I've not seen any marketing, packaging or receipts for one. I have seen a few, I have four. The story that was told to the collector I got my first one from was, there were only 10 made. That appeared to be possible to me for a while as all the other ones I could get a serial number on were in the G210xx range. But then I came across one around G17000 and then one in the high G09000 range. I don't know how many were made but I'm pretty sure it's more than 10. I've only seen 2 on a Lightning frame, all the rest were either on a Ruger or were just the receiver/barrel alone. I've seen a thread where someone states that Gunparts.com sold off a few. I doubt that as every other Lightning part they have ever sold stayed on the website, just showing out of stock. These always seemed to me to be just a gimmick, until just recently. A member here said that he had heard that AMT was experimenting with a folding stock to market with them, which makes total sense to me, they loved to invent things. I am in the process of investigating that angle right now. Funny timing, the G09000 came to me just recently. It came receiver/barrel only with a shoulder stock. I have not seen it assembled and I'm not totally sure it's legal, but it looks like it might be. It's actually in the mail right now. Stay tuned!

I thought I had a pretty good collection of Lightnings but Bulls Eye's collection blew mine out of the water. Mostly still on the hunt for a 12in bull barrel. And a 16in if I could find one on an AMT frame or at least a stainless Ruger frame. Also wouldn't mind having at least one of the early ones with the rounded sides but for some reason most of those show up sitting on a black Ruger frame.

Keep your eye out. The 16 1/2" come up every once in a while. I found 2 last year. I think they were mostly sold without frames, I'm not sure if any were sold with Lightning frames. I'm not actually sure is AMT actually sold any. I think most came on the market after the bankruptcy.
The round-side were made to go on the blued Ruger, that's why you see so many.
The 12 1/2" round-side is second in rarity to the 16 1/2", which are mostly flat-side tapered Lightnings. |

I would guess that they are a little easier to find in California since that is where they were made. Every one of my lightnings have been shipped in from other states. I have seen a few listed in Oklahoma but normally priced to high.

I've only been back in Cali for a few months. I got all my Lightning while living in Oregon. I have only got a couple out of Cali. Mostly I found them in Texas and Florida. Texans don't seem to value Lightnings much, all my best deals came from there, just a couple months before I moved, I picked up a 16 1/2" with a rare butt stock for $500.00. Florida seems to have a lot of AMT collectors, so those generally don't come cheap. There is a Lightning for sale right now on GB with some wood grips. These grips were originally going on Lightning Bulls Eyes but after the law suit they had some in stock and put them on a very few of late production Lightnings. I would buy it, if I didn't live in Cali, can't import them here.
