Bob Barbasiewicz did this on his custom barrels.  He moved the front sight back far enough to provide a
proper crown.  That may be why he pinned on his sights on.  The factory just pressed the front sight on flush with the muzzle.  This way they could drill a horizontal hole, between the sight blade and the barrel, to fill with weld to secure the blade to the barrel.  Patrick is going to provide a proper crown. I forgot that Bob B cut that kind of a crown.  I just looked at one and it is very close to the same.

I remember taking a photo of the inside of N.H. AM shop with my Pentax ME film camera.
I have always kept my photos I'll see what I can find next week.

I can't wait to see the picture.

I once wrote about how I got involved with the Auto Mag.  The story starts at the old B&B gun store location. 

"It was February of 1972.  I was just out of Air Force technical school in Biloxi, Mississippi and was assigned to my first permanent duty station, Nellis AFB in Las Vegas.  I had a few weeks of leave and spent most of it running around Van Nuys, California, with my no-good biker friends.  We wanted to go shooting so we rode our Motorcycles to B&B Sales at their old Chandler Boulevard location in North Hollywood, to buy some ammo.  We only needed some 12 gage ammo, but I was drawn to a glass case that was in the middle of the customer area.  In it were four polished Auto Mags.  (# XP0014-15-16 & 17.)   

I asked the salesman and he told me that Auto Mag was out of production and no more would be made.  These were four experimental Auto Mags and they were for sale at over $1,300 each.  That was too steep for me so I put it out of my mind.  I was certainly in the right place at the right time but I was too young to buy one and I was broke.  It would be years before I would own my first Auto Mag."

I remember B&B very well, I liked when they moved to the larger building on Oxnard.
If I remember correctly B&B folded due to the brothers always arguing ......

Thanks for sharing the pictures.

It is clearly something unique.

What its history is before you got it we will probably never know, but I wouldn't spend too much time thinking about it. 

The history of Auto Mags is sketchy and there are gaps in the history and it is inconsistent.  So at any moment for any Auto Mag item there may be questions about how it came to be, I have come to accept that if you can hold it in your hand it is REAL, and you WILL know it its an Auto Mag (vs something else, so unless you are a collector buying a super expensive item, or you are a seller trying to maximize your profit on a deal, I really don't think it matters any more, just appreciate that you have a unique piece of firearms history.

Too many here are obsessed with making a buck on their Auto Mag items, I simply enjoy them for what they are, unique and interesting pieces. And while I enjoy the custom work of Lee Jurras and Kent Lomont, I am also thrilled just to see a standard El Monte.

Given how few Auto Mag items were produced we are the fortunate few to have anything Auto Mag.

If that barrel were for sale and I stumbled across it, all I would be concerned about is its physical condition, if it was sound, I can 100% assure you it would be going home with me ;-)

So I say enjoy it, I know I would.

I've found out a little more info from another member.....

"Wanted to let you know what I found out about your 10.5 Pasadena barrel, I talked to Bruce Stark and Larry Grossman and it is considered a mismatch barrel to the frame and the name was put on by the guys in the back to make extra money I was pretty sure there wasn't any Pasadena's like that but anyway you can always keep shooting it and fix the end of the barrel it slipped down, easy fix"

I did buy these as a separate unit from N.H. A.M. without a lower frame.
I does shoot nicely & I do have a You Tube video on Mar. 21 2019 at an indoor range, my wife
took in on her Iphone . "44 Auto Mag test Pasadena unit"
It is definitely unusual & never had any issues with it.

I think it would be a mistake to consider it a lessor piece because it may not have been assembled in 1971 and/or lettering proper for the time of its manufacture.

It is an Auto Mag barrel.

Per your observations, it shoots well.

Based on those facts, I say just enjoy it.

Who knows, what will happen in time with its value.

All Auto Mag items are hard to find, and "custom" Auto Mag items even harder to get.

In time, your 10 1/2" barrel may end up being more valuable than a standard El Monte barrel just because it is an oddity. 

Matter of fact if you had both on the counter (a standard 10 1/2" barrel and yours) I might pay a few dollars more today, again, just because it is an oddity and I like odd things.

In the past I have seen .44 AMP barrels marked with .357 AMP lettering and thought that it should be worth a few dollars more just because of the mistake. 

In the rare coin world, a mis-stampped coin if often a very unique piece and worth a significant amount more than a standard counterpart.

As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and you are the man with his hands on it!

If you decide you wish to throw it away because there is some question about its history, I will be very happy to rescue it.  ;-)

Bruce , I have been trying to find the old photo I took of the interior years ago of the North Hollywood Auto Mag shop & I'm not able to locate it. I do remember testing at the time my new Pentax Me film camera.
Very sorry , it might be in my sisters storage unit in Woodland Hills CA. , I'll try to have a look in the next few months.
