I have sent William Bryant some 6AL4V Titanium for a set of grips.
This material certainly isn't the easiest to work with that's for darn sure in fact a bit scary as he can  attest to with sparkling shavings flying out & burning a hole in the work shirt.
Here are a few images , still more work to do on shaping.
As far as the price for something like this that remains to be seen , & no matter what the price it will
be well worth all his effort that's for darn sure !

Here's another image from William .
5hrs into just the first step of shaping , this titanium does not like grinding or any high speed sanding ,
it's like a 4th of July sparkler ....have to use slow speed which makes it harder to smooth things out.
In addition to a stinky smell as well.
The mystery titanium masterpiece continues at a slow pace......

I guess maybe I am old fashioned but I do not see what the attraction of titanium grips would be for any firearm.

I have tried aluminum grips on a few firearms and they certainly were not what I wanted.

Titanium is expensive and is proving what I have heard about being hard to work with and equally hard on tools.

I feel G10  should make the best shooter grips and the various micarta's make outstanding looking grips and show excellent durability.

Here is the right side , still needs to be fine sanded before the final polishing.
This will not be an easy job.
It will be interesting to see the final product , I guess Titanium of grips are more a fascinating
mystique of the idea not being a false color or coating on something to look like the real thing
but actually being the real thing.
Perhaps not very practical for gun grips but certainly uniquely different.

Looks like hard work!
If polishing does not work, you might try brushed satin look or "jeweling" that could hide some minor errors. The jeweling might be a bit to much bling-bling though...

Hi Steve,

As always, you amaze and fascinate me.

I am intrigued by this latest project, it is not something I would have expected to see.

Can you share your thinking as to why you wanted Titanium as your grip material.

We have seen many other exotic grips in the past, but this one resets the bar to a new level.

Looking forward to seeing the finished product, William never disappoints, his workmanship is exceptional.

Watching and waiting with excitement.

Hello George,
Well I contacted William to ask him about a set of aluminum grips & he said he could make a set .....
but then I was thinking about how about Titanium & asked if he had ever tried making any grips from
that & he said not yet....but would like to try, so I picked up some 6AL4V Titanium on ebay it was a bit
too thick ....1" thick & 12X12 so he would need to trim everything down.
The material cost me $346.00 & about 4 days after I had found smaller plates 1/2" think & would have made things much easier on William but I had already purchased the other size.
So why Titanium ...to be a little bit different....I'm not really sure , I've always had a fascination with the it I guess.
William said the Titanium grips are actually heaver then the aluminum set.
I'm planing to try & finish up the final sanding & polishing myself not to save any money, it's fun trying something I've never worked on before.......call me crazy I guess.
But I must say this William Bryant sure is the ultimate kind of fabrication , just absolutely amazing hands down !

I like what Steve is having made, only difference for me would be I like the checkering and thinness of the Pasadena grips, have them anodized satin black and I think your on to something and they will never break even if dropped.
William is a true craftsman so I will have a few projects for him when he has time

It would be really difficult to do.

I have tried aluminum grips on guns, not auto mags, and they are extremely hard to keep tight.  Most grip materials flex some so you can tighten them up good. Aluminum did not flex enough to tighten and without hours and hours of fitting, it is about impossible to get them to match up to the grip frame.

Can you checker titanium?  If it is thin and not a perfect match they could crack.

I have played around with Titanium and I really don't think they could crack but i'm no expert, just an Electrical contractor, it's about the same weight as Aluminum but with the strength of Steel, anyone else work with it
Now checkering Titanium that's totally different, I would not know where to start that's why I need to talk to William about my idea

They look great and not to thick, are you going to leave them polished or seal / clear coat them, I don't know if they will tarnish if left raw
Question I have, I wonder if you can anodize titanium ??????????

Hi Ed,
When I get them I'll probably do a few steps in fine sanding & some polishing on a buffing wheel.
I'm not sure are about them tarnishing & I don't know if they can be anodized. I'm planing on leaving them with a polished finish.

Hello Ed,
Well that's good news.
I'm in no hurry on the other projects William has going on for me , that was a lot of work he had done in such a short time with the Titanium grips & an amazingly beautiful job at that.Beer

I just got some new information from William on the Ti. grips.
The Titanium weighs in at 9 1/2 oz. & the Aluminum weighs in at 6oz.

Since the Titanium is so strong maybe I could do a little skeletonizing ....you know lighten them
up a bit.....but then they won't float .....I guess they wouldn't have floated from the beginning
right.... Clown

Here some good news for you Ed the Titanium CAN be Anodized......red, green, blue, purple, gold,
orange, clear, oh & your favorite Ed black.......so who can checker them is your next question Wacko  ?

To be honest my favorite color is Green............ didn't I send you pics of my sand rail or other toys.
I love the original Stainless and Black look of the Automag Wink

I just received the titanium grips from William so I did a little more sanding, 400, 500, 600, 800.
I don't know if I like the satin or the polished finish......I guess I could leave each side different...Wacko Oh by the way while polishing on the buffer Titanium doesn't heat like Aluminum.

My question is how do polished grips look on a rough cast frame?

Posted By: Auto Mag
Date Posted: 24 Mar 2020 at 1:53pm
Could be an interesting contrast, better yet, how about blacken the frame then add the polished grips and a polished barrel.

Super pimp for someone wanting a lot of flash.

Wish you had an 8 1/2' VR polished Grossman or Maynard barrel with the classic rib, it would be off the charts.

I guess I am different but the "mono-chromatic shiny" look isn't for me.  I still prefer the stainless with dark grips, either black or dark brown.

On the barrel, it looks great.

Have you got it to shooting yet?

The ti grips might be a little slick but do feel very nice & the look of the ti grip in person just can't be beat  no words can really describe them, I've been using these Hogue grips they feel very secure .

I really do not like the looks of the Hogue G10 grips either but I bet they are good to shoot with.  If and when my Founder's Edition comes, I plan on getting a set to try.  I have gone to VZ G10 grips for most of the guns I shoot a lot.

How is the barrel running was what I was asking?

The Hogue G-10 grips and not that pretty but your in total control of your Automag when shooting and they wont break, as far as them being too rough, I was an Electrician for 41 years so I guess my hands are a little rougher than most, I find them comfortable to hold and there thin like the Pasadena grips Wink
The best looking grips I have found are the Black Micarta, absolutely gorgeous and will not break.
Thanks to a board member for helping me out...........Thank You again and if you ever need anything don't hesitate to ask  Thumbs Up
Bob......you are correct I too love the Black grips installed on Stainless Steel, nothing looks better except maybe aluminum fully checkered and anodized satin Black........I can dream can't I

Oh sorry Bob, the new barrel ;
Things are very tight , I'm currently shooting only 4 round mags, the bolt I opted for is without the
Assist Rotation Cut & when they become available I'll buy one.
A little hard pulling back the Cocking Piece , I've done some polishing on the rear of the bolt on the new style system that goes into the Cocking Piece & that seems to help.
The tolerances are much tighter on the lug area then on my Pasadena bolt so I'm going to need to shoot
a few hundred rounds or more on the new system to brake things in.
I've only shot about 15 rounds & I've had a few feed problems.
I'm using an original Pasadena magazine & waiting for the new ones to become available.
I'm also using Rig's lube.

I am glad to here that the G10 grips are thin.  When I first saw them I thought they looked thick for some reason.  Are they thinner than the N Hollywood/El Monte grips?

I am not afraid of them being too rough.  Some of the VZ's are way to aggressive for me.  I shoot a 460 Rowland on a 1911 platform and I switched down to a set that were a little bit smoother.

Bob
The grips are very thin, the G-10 grips are about .288 /.290 at the bottom of the grips, where you install the mag
My stock Pasadena grips are grips .279 / .280 for the same side and location so they are very comparable.

I seen straight/slotted heads screws on sites before and think they(yours) look good, the allen/hex/torx heads I think are much better looking BUT it's hard to keep them strong unless you cut them as most cut threads/grooves too high and it weakens them as shown on other threads showing them broken. Yes, them grips sure do look nice also! Sort of looks like they melted metal over and quickly form the shape, saying this in a good way as they look/fit perfect as if made from the start for it.
Very nice hi-def pics, just zoom in on them ED.
Just in case you are lazy, here is what I see.

I was talking to William about another subject and he said he really liked the titanium grips as the color is darker than aluminum and it matches the gun better.

Why not take some pics in natural light.  I find that detail show up best there.  I shoot on the north side of the house in "light shade" if you know what I mean.
