I recall reading about the Jurras Howdah cartridges for the Contender; even bought a set of cartridges in a box at one time maybe twenty years ago.
My interest centers around the .577 Howdah and the .500Howdah pistols - are these considered destructive devices as they are greater than .500 in bore size and thus prohibited or was a variance given by the ATF?
(I have access to a prototype singleshot handgun and would like to produce them in these cartridges.   Any thoughts would be appreciated!)
Yes, I know what a howdah is - the wicker basket in which a Brit  on safari in India rode in whilst on back of an elephant - however the best tongue in cheek explanation on how the howdah got its name was the Brit exclaiming "How dah f**k did that tiger get up on my elephant?"
Thanks in advance for any info or references!

I believe if you access the archieves of this site and the old Lee Jurras site there were several threads discussing the Howdah.
I have a set of the Howdah calibers in a dummy box. They are big.
Where in the Mitten do you hang your hat? I am down in the SE section by the D

It was widely thought that (5) jurras 577 howdahs were made but it has recently been revealed that a 6th exists that was custom made for Lees ammo maker at the time "Asa Davis" The 577 was able to skirt the regulation for .500 bore due to the fact that the 577 is a Black Powder Howdah pistol and the ruling is different for black powder.

Of the .500 caliber Howdahs , there were (14) made and the cartridge is based on the 500 nitro express cartridge like all other howdahs and is not black powder

I actually asked ATF about building rifles over 50 caliber and they told me it would not be a DD as long as it was determined (by ATF) to be a sporting rifle/pistol.  Either way, I wouldn't let that hold me back from purchasing a cool ass toy.  With the price tags on these specialty guns so high, what's another $200 bucks for a tax stamp?

I guess they didn't consider the Gyrojet Rocket Pistol to be "sporting" when they made them drop the 13mm in favor of the sub-50cal 12mm.

CZ is producing rifles in the new .550 Magnum, and you can buy brass and components, but not loaded ammo last time I looked.

There are lots of >.500 cartridges out there. The ATF paperwork for getting an exemption doesn't seem to be that big of a deal, considering how many monster-bore cartridges have been developed by the whackjobs on the Accurate Reloading forum...

Anyone want a set of 45 J. Magnum dies, 4 die RCBS set?  I got it in with some other stuff.  I think Lee told me this one was based on the 458 case, when I asked here before, though I am not sure.

$125 plus shipping anyone?

I'm sure these are rare.  Good price on a group "G" die set from RCBS.
