Good day all. I want/need to fabricate a hammer strut for my Automag III. These are notorious for bending the struts and are extremely hard to find replacements for nowadays. I was going to post a picture but the url would be to a commercial business so not doing that. It is a simple stem (.075) square on .075 sheet stock, with a flat spade about half it's length and a .125 hole in it- not much to its shape or fabrication. Can someone enlighten me as to a material that would be best to make it from to resist the stem bending and the hammer link pin wear? Needs to be tough and resistant. Maybe 4130 Chromoly?
Heat treating with a torch will be a challenge as the "stem" is about 3
times smaller than the spade/hole end and difficult to uniformly
heat-treat. The design bugaboo is where the stem meets and is the point
of bending (failure). It is a pretty straight forward piece and with the correct thickness of the proper material, it shouldn't be too hard of a project. Even laser cutting or EDM may be viable. After all AMT (apparently) did not do a particularly stellar job of manufacturing the part. The Automag III in .30 carbine is a great piece, but there were a couple things that engineers could have been done better. Thanks kindly, much appreciated |

Maybe we should organize a group effort and everyone start reaching out to Numrich and Interams inquiring about hammer struts for the auto mag3. Maybe it would make one of them decide that they should start cranking some out.

I have a friend who is a machinist at a custom gun manufacturer. I sent him a picture of a strut and he thought it was a part they could make. I’m going to give him the strut from my AM III and see what he thinks. He asked what people would pay for one. What would people pay for a strut?

Just FYI. Jacks First reproduces the AM II strut now.
They also have many other Automag II parts reproduced now. They charge $26 for one for an AMII. |

I made one out of 2mm sheet steel today. Let’s see how it works…

What kind of steel is it? I will be very interested in 'how' it holds up. Glad to see someone take initiative to fabricate such a simple part. AMT's attempt at it leaves a lot to be desired... At least if attempts to reproduce it fail you did as well as they did! I ordered some 4130 chromoly in .080 a couple days ago myself. That's just a tad-thicker than the original. Not so sure one even needs to fool with heat treating as this gun has to be treated with 'kid-gloves' anyway, and having the stem bend is better than having it sheer from hardening at the juncture- putting it totally out of business. Mine had a previous owner and I always have had a problem with 'bashful' firing of rifle-primed cartridges, but it fired pistol-primed ammo religiously. I was surprised to discover the strut was bent as it had never been abused to my knowledge- but it was and guessing that was the cause of 'bashful' response to the harder primers. IF someone would produce a replacement part with even slighter resistance to failure I would guess it would be worth $25 + REASONABLE shipping. However, there are too many skinners out there who are capitalizing on the unavailability of parts for these discontinued guns. My Automag III has been shot for years (light use) and to my amazement the barrel delay spring and plunger were missing! It always functioned properly as far as I know and I can't recall ever seeing those pieces.. pretty sure they were never there when I got it. Anyway, wanting to set it right, I managed to scrounge up those two pieces for $4 each and a cost of $13.25 FLAT RATE shipping. $21.25 total for two pieces you could misplace in one if your nose nostrils that takes over a week to ship across three States? GIVE ME A BREAK! |

I have no clue about what steel it is. It was just some scrap that I had here laying around for years. I’ll test it Wednesday. If it still looks ok after 50 rounds I guess it will be fine for a while.

The whole design sucks. It might be better to just cut off the entire long skinny shaft, run a reamer down the cobbled up spring bore hole in the frame to smooth the walls, then use a spring of the correct diameter that fills the hole so it can't deform and worm up in the hole. Maybe run a second counter-wound spring inside of the main one and make a new short strut with a round base to press down on the dual spring setup with a little short tit to keep it centered. Just my thoughts....but what do I know. Maybe Kincel will hop in here and give us his two cents on a real fix. Tony Rumore Tromix |

Run it up, until you blow it up, then back it down a bit.
